‘Everyone in Greenall Bridge knew Sam Carraclough's Lassie. In fact, you might say that she was the best-known dog in the village … because nearly every man in the village agreed she was the finest collie he had ever laid eyes on.’ Sam's son Joe and Lassie are a devoted pair but a time comes when they have to be parted. The Carracloughs are not well off and when they fall on hard times Sam is forced to sell his champion dog to the Duke of Rudling, whose great estate borders their Yorkshire village. But Lassie escapes and makes her way home to the Carracloughs. The Duke, not one to be tricked by a dog, claims Lassie back and she is taken many miles away to the Duke's other home in Scotland. But again Lassie pines for her proper home and escapes. Undaunted by the challenge, she sets off on the long trek back to her Yorkshire home. She faces many dangers and adventures along the way but she also meets some kind people who offer her help and comfort. At the end, when Joe has given up all hope of ever seeing his long-lost companion again, the weary Lassie returns and he finds her waiting for him at the school gates in her accustomed spot, just like old times. Lassie and Joe are joyfully reunited. Against all the odds, Lassie has come home!

Lassie's English creator, Eric Knight, drew on first-hand knowledge of 1930s' economic hardship and his collie dog Toots to write 'Lassie Come Home'. His magazine story about an impoverished family from the Yorkshire Dales forced to sell its beloved sheepdog to a Scottish landowner was to establish Lassie as 'the world's favourite dog'. Although MGM's film of 1943 made a star of Elizabeth Taylor, it also marked the rise to Hollywood stardom for the canine saviour with human intelligence. Lassie the dog was to feature in six more movies before transferring to US television in 1954. Her fame grew with every passing year, with one collie after another being recast in the role. Eric Knight, however, was not to share in Lassie's success. Tragically, in 1943, while travelling on a wartime intelligence mission, he was killed in a plane crash. Author Peter Haining also examines the history of the rough collie as a breed on both sides of the Atlantic.

A Contemporary romance novella about a lass, her dog…and her Highlander…

The Highlander and the American…

Toni Olson has traveled to Scotland to bring back the perfect Border Collie, not the perfect man. But the moment she lays eyes on Devlin Montgomery at a Highland Fair, it’s as if the strapping young laird with his lilting accent, dark auburn curls, and cleft chin has come strolling straight from the pages of one of her favorite novels.

The last thing Devlin needs in his life is a blond, leggy American tourist obsessed with the romance of the Scottish Highlands. But he still can’t resist playing the hero to her damsel in distress. Too late, he realizes the sassy beauty is in danger of claiming not only his favorite dog but his heart…
